From the beginning, a major challenge for the trustees of the American Academy in Berlin has been to establish an academic and policy institute without relying entirely on public funding. The idea of a center of transatlantic dialogue was initially envisioned by leading German and American statesmen, among them Richard C. Holbrooke, Richard von Weizsäcker, and Henry Kissinger, and the American Academy opened its doors in 1998.

Ever since the first initiatives, private contributors have been essential to bringing this idea to fruition. The following list documents contributions made to the Institution between June 2003 and September 2004, for which the Academy is extremely grateful:
