Editorische Notiz.

Wir befinden uns in der Hochphase der Akademisierung und Klassischsprechung Dylans, über den zuletzt auch eine Vielzahl wissenschaftlicher oder halbwissenschaftlicher Bücher erschienen ist. Er wird jetzt in die europäisch-amerikanische Literatur- und Musikgeschichte eingeordnet; nebbich.

Bob Dylan „In his own write“, wie es bei John Lennon hieß: Auf dieser Seite stehen die Songtitel der offiziell veröffentlichten Studio-Alben seit 1962. Zudem hat er rund ein Dutzend Live-Alben herausgebracht. Dylans Buchtitel sind hier kursiv, seine Filme in Versalien gesetzt. Dabei kommt es gelegentlich zu Doppelnennungen, wie im Fall der erst im letzten Jahr veröffentlichten Aufnahmen „Live at the Gaslight“ von 1962. Nicht nur die Times, auch die Songs sind a-changin, ständig.

Bob Dylan live: ein Eldorado, ein Abgrund von Bootlegs. Illegale Konzertmitschnitte gehen in die Tausende, der Grau- und Schwarzmarkt kann den Fan zur Verzweiflung treiben und in den finanziellen Ruin. Columbia hat dazu im Lauf der Zeit eine Reihe offiziell herausgebracht, „The Bootleg Series“ 1– 7, allerdings nicht in chronologischer Folge. Er bleibt ein Meister der Verwirrung, der Fort- und Umschreibung seines Repertoires.

Listen hat nicht erst die Pop-Welt erfunden. 1862 erschien die erste Auflage von „Chronologisch-thematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke Wolfgang Amadé Mozarts“, erstellt von Ludwig Ritter von Köchel. Das berühmte Köchelverzeichnis umfasst 626 Titel. Bei Dylan ist die stets im Fluß befindliche Sichtung und Bewahrung des Oeuvre im Internet ein nie vollendetes Werk unzähliger Fans; eine wahrhaft demokratische Prozedur. Wir stehen jetzt bei gut 450 Titeln.

„Doesn’t it ever get tiring singing the same song over and over again? No, it doesn’t. That’s the thing about music. It’s not on the page. It’s got a life of it’s own.“ Auf die Frage, ob es nicht einmal langweilig würde, dieselben Songs immer wieder zu spielen, hat Dylan geantwortet: „Nein, Musik steht nicht auf dem Blatt. Sie hat ihr eigenes Leben.“

Seit 1988 läuft Dylans never ending tour, mit rund 80 Konzerten pro Jahr weltweit, diesen Sommer auch wieder in Europa, am 2. Juli in Gelsenkirchen. Er ist berühmt und berüchtigt für die destruktiv-kreativen Variationen seines Repertoires – auch darüber wird im Internet von den Dylanologen akribisch Buch geführt: Welchen Song er wo gespielt hat. Wie oft ein Song über die Jahre live erklingt. Dazu gibt es ausführlichste Statistiken, die an Nummerierungsmethoden von Archäologen erinnern, wenn diese ihre Fundstücke, und noch die winzigsten und unscheinbarsten, sortieren, rubrizieren, konservieren. Nichts geht im Netz verloren – kein Medienbericht, in dem Dylan oder Dylan-Bezogenes eine Rolle spielt.

Dylan und seine Musik interpretiert sich am besten selbst; an Dylan-Exegesen herrscht indes kein Mangel. Greil Marcus, der wohl berühmteste Dylan-Forscher, hat eine Monografie über einen einzigen Song geschrieben, „Like a Rolling Stone“. In einem anderen Buch, „Basement Blues. Bob Dylan und das alte, unheimliche Amerika“, entwickelt Marcus die Theorie, dass der amerikanischen Musik nie etwas Besseres passiert sei als die Sessions von Bob Dylan und The Band 1967 in der Nähe von Woodstock, New York, im Keller eines Landhauses, genannt Big Pink. Bald darauf waren seinerzeit Bootlegs aus dem sagenumwobenen Keller aufgetaucht, schließlich kam es 1975 zur offiziellen Veröffentlichung der „Basement Tapes“ auf einem Doppelalbum. Aber das war nur ein Teil der für Dylan so typischen Geschichte – für die Geheimnistuerei, die Legendenbildung, die Marktmechanismen. Dylan und The Band hatten, mit primitivem Equipment, sehr viel mehr (traditionelle) Songs eingespielt.

Jahrelang habe ich danach gesucht, und überflüssig zu sagen: vergeblich. Auf einer einschlägigen Internetseite wurden „The Genuine Basement Tapes 1– 5“ hymnisch-akribisch besprochen, und ein Hinweis warnte: Don’t even dare asking where to buy them! Wag’ nicht zu fragen, wo man sie kaufen kann. Gerüchteweise musste man ein paar tausend Dollar dafür locker machen. Eines Abends in New York, in einem kleinen Laden in der Nähe der St. Mark’s Church im East Village, hatte ich die fünf CD’s in der Hand. Zahlte einen knappen Hunderter und verschwand wie ein ägyptischer Grabräuber in der Nacht. Andere Dylan-Aficionados gäben ihre Großmutter für den Live-Mitschnitt vom, sagen wir, 24. 4. 1992 in Waikiki oder 29. 6. 1978 in West-Berlin. Es fehlt immer was, man wird mit Bob Dylan nicht fertig.
