Es ist der tödlichste Brand in Hongkong seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg: Am Mittwoch fingen sieben der acht Blöcke einer Wohnanlage Feuer. Die Suche nach Überlebenden läuft.

Mindestens 66 Menschen wurden bis Donnerstagmorgen zur Versorgung in Krankenhäuser gebracht. 17 von ihnen befinden sich in einem „kritischen“ Zustand, 24 in einem „sehr ernsten“.

Auch ein Feuerwehrmann kam bei dem Einsatz ums Leben. Kollegen fanden den 37-Jährigen bewusstlos in dem Gebäude.

Am Mittwochnachmittag war in der Wohnanlage Wang Fuk Court im Hongkonger Bezirk Tai Po das Feuer ausgebrochen.

Das Gebiet umfasst acht Wohnblöcke mit jeweils 32 Stockwerken. In den insgesamt 2000 Wohnungen leben vor allem alte Menschen.

Für die Bauarbeiten waren die Türme zudem mit einem Gerüst aus Bambus eingefasst, was zusätzlich wie ein Brandbeschleuniger gewirkt haben könnte.

Im März verfügte die Regierung der chinesischen Sonderverwaltungszone, dass mindestens bei der Hälfte aller Bauprojekte Metall- statt Bambusgerüste genutzt werden müssen.

Sofort habe er seine Wohnung im 11. Stock verlassen, in der Eile nichts mitgenommen. Nur eine halbe Stunde später hätten auch die Blöcke 5, 7, 4 und dann 1 gebrannt.

Bis Donnerstagmittag Ortszeit konnte das Feuer langsam unter Kontrolle gebracht werden. Ganz gelöscht war es bis dahin noch immer nicht. Die Behörden ordneten eine Untersuchung aller größerer Baustellen der Metropole an.
